Introduction
My saved Resident Evil 4 Remake in-game files were adding up.
I wanted to delete several files, such as a handful of incomplete gameplay, which I no longer needed.
I kept my completed plays for Standard, Hardcore, and Professional difficulty modes to use them for my New Game Plus plays.
I googled for valid solutions to delete the unnecessary saved files and wrote an understandable version. This article is the result.
During my research, I found seven valid reasons gamers might want to delete their saved files, and I’ve listed them below.

Seven reasons video gamers might delete their saved files
-
Start a fresh gameplay or playthrough:
What’s the difference between a
gameplay
and aplaythrough?
Gameplay
is the general video game experience.Playthrough
plays a video game from start to finish. We replay the game from the beginning, especially if it’s a story-driven experience we enjoy.
Starting fresh lets us experience the game again with a clean slate and make different choices.
Some games offer a New Game Plus mode, where we replay the story with unlocked abilities and items from the previous playthrough.
New Game Plus mode lets us replay the game with things we earned in our first playthrough, like powerful weapons, stronger armor, or special skills.
Deleting the old save allows us to experience the early parts of the game again with a powerful character.
-
We crave a new challenge:
We might crave a new challenge and want to re-experience the game in a challenging setting.
Deleting our saves forces us to restart and develop new strategies.
We might delete saved files to attempt a challenge run, playing with limitations or self-imposed rules for a challenging experience.
-
Experiment with new choices:
In games where your choices have consequences, wrong decisions made early on can have a significant effect later.
Deleting a save allows us to try different options and see how the story unfolds differently.
Some games offer different ways to experience them.
Deleting the save lets us explore a different character class, moral alignment, or play style.
-
Free up space in gaming computer or console hard drives:
While ample space is less of a concern on newer consoles and systems, saving files on systems with limited storage can take up valuable space.
Deleting old saves frees up room for new games and saves.
-
We’re disappointed with our gameplay or playthrough:
If we hit a frustrating point in the game or make a wrong decision with our character, we might delete the save and start over.
If we get stuck in a frustrating part of the game with no way to backtrack, we might delete the save and restart to avoid the dead end.
We may have made a wrong decision in the game, got stuck somewhere, cannot progress, or we’re not enjoying our current character build.
Deleting the save allows us to fix our mistakes or try a new approach.
We can make choices that drastically alter the game world in open-world games.
If we’re unhappy with the outcome, we might delete the save and try a different path.
-
Moving on to new games:
After finishing a very long gameplay, we might delete the save to signify completion and make room for new plays.
After fully completing a game, we might delete the save to signify completion and move on to a new one.
-
Remove multiple old save files:
Some games allow for many saved files; we might delete older ones we don’t plan to revisit.

Why Resident Evil 4 Remake (RE4R) might not be ideal for deleting saved files
My gaming platform is a personal computer (PC), and I get most games from Steam, a video game storefront owned by Valve Corporation.
RE4R could be better suited for deleting saved files. Deleting a saved game file can be inconvenient. Below are the reasons:
- The game itself doesn’t offer a way to delete saves in-game.
- The process depends on the platform you’re playing on (for example, PC vs. Consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch)).
- On PC, if the gamer knows what they’re doing, they can navigate to the save file location and manually delete saved files.
- The deletion process on a PC might involve extra steps compared to other gaming platforms.
- Disabling Steam Cloud sync might bother some gamers.
Identify and remember the game’s App ID number
-
Open Steam.
-
See your Steam library.
Your Library will be your default Steam window if you’ve set up Steam’s Interface Start-up Location to Library by doing the following:
- Click the Steam Menu (located at the top left corner).
- Click Settings on the pulldown menu.
- In the left column, click Interface. Β Β * On the Start Up Location pulldown menu select Library.
-
Go to the RE4R game.
-
Right-click on the game image or click its gear βοΈ icon, then click Properties.
-
In the Updates tab, see the App ID: 2050650.
Remember this number.
Turn off Steam Cloud save synchronization
- In the Steam client games library, right-click on the RE4R game and click on Properties.
- In the General tab, see Steam Cloud and untick Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud for Resident Evil 4.
- Exit Steam.
Find the game’s Steam data in File Explorer and delete data with caution
The instructions below are for the Windows 10 operating system.
-
In File Explorer, go to the folder where the game’s Steam data is stored:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/userdata/your userdata number/Game's App ID/remote/win64_save.
Your userdata number (mine has nine numbers, and yours might have more or less) is the same as your Steam Account Friend Code.
To find your Friend Code, click Steam on the top menu of the Steam Client, then click Settings; see your Friend Code below your profile photo.
-
If you want to start the game as if playing for the first time after a new install, delete the **win64_save** folder.
-
If you want to delete the saved slots, follow the steps below:
A. In the win64_save folder, see files, sorted by Name, ascending order, that begins with the files:
data000.bin data00-1.bin
B. Please IGNORE and DO NOT touch the above files because those files store data from when you started the game for the first time.
C. Then, see the following files named:
dataXXXSlot.bin
The XXX represents the game’s slot number.
For example, data015Slot.bin.
D. See the Date Modified column on the right of the file name, which is the date and time you saved that specific playthrough.
Notice that the date and time are the same as on your save file in the game.
E. Delete the dataXXXSlot.bin files you want gone.
Save new gameplay
-
Open Steam.
-
Start the game and play as usual.
-
Save your play in the game’s slot.
-
Exit the game.
Allow Steam Cloud save synchronization
-
In your Steam Library, right-click the RE4R game.
-
Click Properties.
-
In the General tab in the Steam Cloud section, tick Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud for Resident Evil 4 and then close that window.
-
See the cloud Β βοΈ icon with exclamation β point and yellow dot that Steam cloud is out of sync.
-
Click Out of sync in the game’s window, then click the Retry Sync button.
-
Upload your game’s local save to Steam Cloud.
-
See the Cloud Status icon has a checkmark βοΈ and see Cloud Status Up to date on the game’s window.
Conclusion
Relive the horror and delete the baggage of Resident Evil 4 Remake. π¨
Deleting RE4R saved files might make deleting saves a bit of a creepy crawl through your PC’s dark corners.
Deleting saved files in some games can be a straightforward process, and not having an in-game deletion option in RE4R might present a challenge.
PC users might find the above steps easy to follow.
If you need more clarification about the above steps or find them inconvenient, it’s best to keep your existing RE4R saves.
There’s always the option to overwrite save slots for new playthroughs without touching your completed ones.
